Kollwitz was at her strongest producing powerful images protesting against social injustice and oppression of all kinds. The despair of the mother who cannot feed her starving baby is understood by all. It was a cry for help in a Germany which, in the early 1920s was facing financial meltdown through unemployment, inflation and having to pay war-compensation (reparations) to the Allied nations.
