Introduction to German Expressionism

Expressionism was a revolutionary, new way of looking at art, and life, pioneered in the first decades of the 20th century. Although its exact definition is disputed, essentially it was about the search for a deeper, more spiritual meaning to life.

We will focus on Germany, which brought together many progressive artists and writers, primarily German, but also many other nationalities.

The artists Max Liebermann (1847-1935), Lovis Corinth (1858-1925) and Max Slevogt (1886-1932) are considered the leading trio of German Impressionists, the immediate forerunners of Expressionism.
