The artist produced an original clay sculpture, from which the bronze edition was cast. Paavo Nurmi (1897 – 1973), nicknamed the ‘Flying Finn’, was the master of long distance running in the early 20th century, winning 9 gold and 3 silver medals in twelve events at the 1920, 1924 and 1928 Olympic Games.
The artist shows the beauty and athleticism of Nurmi’s body, the elongated limbs suggesting fluid motion.
In 1932 she was awarded the Olympia Prize for the sculpture.
