Pechstein had been living in Berlin for a year when, in 1909, he was delighted to learn he had sold two of the three paintings he had exhibited at the Berlin Secession. With the money he went on holiday to the remote, unspoiled village of Nidden on the Baltic coast.
This early work shows the colour influence of Matisse and the Fauves, but in a restrained way. Pechstein’s ability to command a powerful emotional response to the world, using powerful colour and distortion would not be fully realised until later. Nevertheless the strong colours and controlled brushwork work combine to give a sense of calm serenity to the scene.
