The simplified forms of the heavily patterned face show the influence of tribal African masks, examples of which the Brücke artists had first encountered in the Dresden Museum of Ethnography. The group were excited by the art of Polynesia and Africa, which they viewed as creatively authentic, untainted by Western ideas and social restrictions, and thus the purest form of expression.
