Vivid, pulsating pink earth, strange blue trees and plants taking on new, unexpected forms characterise the landscape here. This large watercolour was probably painted in the Lebasee region of Pommerania, where Schmidt-Rottluff lived from 1933. It was also a birthday present, given by the artist to his friend Rosa Shapire on the occasion of her 64th birthday.
