Leicester Museums received a set of nine drawings by von Kaulbach in 1926. They were thought to be illustrations to a story. They are numbered so we know the order in which they should be viewed but we do not know what the story is. If you have any information, please get in touch with us at germanexpressionism@leicester.gov.uk
In the eighth scene, things have gone badly wrong for the young man. The man who led him is nowhere to be seen but there is a girl collapsing onto the floor who appears to have been stabbed in the chest. It looks to be the girl who was dreaming earlier in the story and the room is adjacent to her bedroom judging by the piece of furniture (possibly a wig stand?) to the left of the drawing. A knife lies between the girl and the young man who looks to be escaping through a door.
